Little Arrow’s Porcupine Quill Jewelry
Sheila Porter is based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and is a Mi’kmaq quill worker, beader, artisan, and educator, who creates handmade jewelry using natural materials such as porcupine (matues) quills, leather, and deer and moose antler. Porter harvests the quills with respect. Each porcupine may have up to 30,000 quills. After being cleaned, some quills are used in their natural state while others are dyed using natural or commercial dyes. To add further colour to her works, Porter incorporates semi-precious stones, glass beads, and Swarovski crystals. Earring posts are surgical steel. Each design is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
