Mollie Bell Mackay, Untitled [Rural Winter Scene], 1927-1930. Oil on canvas, 40 cm x 50 cm. Collection of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
Mollie Bell Mackay (Toronto, 1908—Halifax, 1962). In the early 1930s, Mollie Bell Mackay was part of the educational team at the Art Gallery of Toronto. Moving to Halifax in 1934, Mackay worked as an art teacher at the Nova Scotia College of Art and with the Nova Scotia Department of Adult Education. She married fellow artist and educator D. C. Mackay in 1934. Mackay was an active member of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists and her mid-century modern paintings capture much of Nova Scotia’s landscapes and people during this time.
